Cicutoxin is one of the most potent plant-based poisons. It affects the central nervous system by blocking gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, causing uncontrolled electrical activity of neurons and severe seizures. It is rapidly absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract and mucous membranes, as well as through wounds.
Lethal Dose:
For humans, the lethal dose is estimated at 0.1-0.3 mg/kg body weight.
Time to Death:
With oral ingestion, the first symptoms appear within 15-60 minutes, and death can occur within 1-3 hours.
If the concentrate or extract enters the bloodstream, death can occur within 30-90 minutes.
Signs of poisoning:
• Sudden agitation, feeling of fear
• Muscle twitching, progressing to severe convulsions
• Vomiting, loss of consciousness
• Difficulty breathing, blue face
• Coma, respiratory paralysis
• Death from respiratory arrest or cerebral edema
It is detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) or HPLC in stomach contents, blood, liver, and brain.
Cicutoxin is rapidly metabolized, but traces can be found in tissues for up to 2-3 days after death.
