Description

KCN is a colorless crystal dissolved in water, forming liquid potassium cyanide (aqueous solution).
It is used in electroplating (gold and silver plating), gold mining, the synthesis of organic compounds, and laboratory processes.
It is an extremely potent poison with an immediate effect, similar in toxicity to hydrocyanic acid (HCN).

The primary mechanism of action is blocking the cytochrome oxidase enzyme in the mitochondria, which stops tissue respiration.
Cells stop absorbing oxygen, causing internal asphyxia.

The poison acts instantly when vapors are inhaled or the solution is ingested.

It is fatal even upon contact with skin and mucous membranes.

Lethal dose:
• For humans - 0.05 g (50 mg) of pure substance.
• For a 1% solution - approximately 5 ml.

Time of death:
If ingested - instantaneous.

Death occurs from respiratory arrest and cardiac paralysis.

Signs of poisoning:
• Metallic or almond-like odor from the mouth (characteristic, but not always present)
• Burning sensation in the throat, sudden weakness, dizziness
• Rapid breathing, followed by convulsions and loss of consciousness
• Pinkish-red skin (due to increased blood oxygenation)
• Dilated pupils that do not react to light
• Coma, respiratory arrest, death

It is found in the blood, brain, stomach, lungs, and liver.
Methods: spectrophotometry, ion chromatography, sodium picrate reaction, gas chromatography.
Corpse signs: cherry-red blood, bitter almond odor, pulmonary and cerebral edema, and thin blood.
Traces of cyanide persist in tissues for up to 48 hours after death (then they decompose).

Store in a tightly closed container, away from moisture.
Shelf life: 1 year.
