Description

KCN is a white or slightly grayish crystalline substance with a bitter almond odor (due to the release of hydrocyanic acid upon contact with moisture).
It is used in electroplating (silver plating, gold plating), metallurgy (gold extraction), organic synthesis, nitrile production, and laboratory analysis.
It is not used in medicine or everyday life due to its extreme toxicity.

A potent systemic cellular poison.

Blocks the cytochrome oxidase enzyme in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, completely stopping intracellular respiration.
Cells stop absorbing oxygen, leading to internal hypoxia.

Toxic by inhalation, ingestion, and contact with moist skin.

The effect is immediate—the poison is rapidly absorbed through the mucous membranes.

Lethal dose:
• For humans: 50 to 100 mg.
• Inhalation of HCN vapors released from the powder is also fatal (even at concentrations of <0.2 mg/L of air).

Time to death:
• Ingestion: within 1-10 minutes.
• Inhalation: 30 seconds to 2 minutes.

Death occurs from paralysis of the respiratory center and cardiac arrest.

Signs of poisoning:
• Metallic or almond-like odor (not noticeable by 20-40% of people).
• Burning sensation in the mouth, nausea, fear, weakness.
• Dizziness, difficulty breathing, rapid pulse.
• Convulsions, loss of consciousness, urinary incontinence.
• Skin and mucous membranes - pink-red (due to oxygenated blood).
• Rapid death within minutes at high doses.

It is detected in the blood, stomach, brain, liver, lungs, and urine.
Methods: spectrophotometry (Picrate reaction), GC-MS, ion chromatography, and chemical test with iron sulfate (formation of Prussian blue).
Characteristic pathological signs:
• Bright red cadaveric spots
• Liquid, deep red blood
• Cerebral and pulmonary edema
• Almond odor at autopsy

Traces of cyanide disintegrate 1-2 days after death (volatile compound).

Store in a tightly sealed container, away from acids, moisture, and heat.
Shelf life: 1 year.
