Dimethylmercury readily penetrates skin, latex, plastic, and the respiratory tract. It is lethal even in microscopic quantities. It destroys central nervous system cells, disrupts protein metabolism, and causes irreversible damage to the brain, liver, and kidneys. Symptoms of poisoning may not appear until 1-3 months after exposure.
Lethal Dose:
Approximately 0.1 ml (2-3 drops) by skin contact or 0.05 mg/kg by inhalation of vapors. Even a single exposure can cause death.
Time to Death:
With skin contact, symptoms appear within 30-90 days, with death usually occurring within 4-8 months due to irreversible damage to the brain and nervous system. With inhalation, symptoms appear within 1-3 months. Death is inevitable.
Signs of poisoning:
• Loss of coordination, unsteadiness of gait
• Numbness of the extremities, trembling, tremors
• Loss of hearing and vision
• Speech and cognitive impairment
• Convulsions, then coma
• Death from damage to the central nervous system
It is determined by measuring methylmercury concentrations in hair, nails, blood, brain, and kidneys.
Analysis methods: mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, atomic absorption analysis.
Store in a sealed glass ampoule, protected from light and moisture.
