Description

C232H350N64O68S14 is a plant-derived protein toxin found in the seeds of the castor oil plant (Ricinus communis).
It is obtained as a byproduct of castor oil production.
It is not used in everyday life; it has been used in biochemical research and as a potential biological weapon (the case of the poisoning of dissident Georgy Markov in 1978 is well-known).
It is extremely toxic when ingested, inhaled, or consumed.

Ricin is a cytotoxin that inhibits protein synthesis in cells.
It blocks ribosomes, leading to cell death and multiple organ failure.

It is tasteless, odorless, and colorless.

It is toxic by any route of administration—oral, parenteral, and inhalation.

Lethal Dose:
• Oral: 5-10 mg per person (~1 mg/kg)
• Inhalation: 0.1-0.3 mg/kg
• Injection: 0.02-0.1 mg/kg
Even 1/2 of a castor bean seed is fatal to an adult if the poison is released in the gastrointestinal tract.

Time to Death:
Depends on route of administration:
- Oral: 2-5 days after ingestion.
- Inhalation or injection: Death is possible within 24-48 hours.
- The first symptoms appear after 4-8 hours.

Signs of poisoning:
• Nausea, vomiting, severe abdominal pain
• Bloody diarrhea, dehydration
• Fever, weakness, headache
• Convulsions, arrhythmia, sudden drop in blood pressure
• Yellowing of the skin, signs of liver and kidney failure
• Inhalation: cough, shortness of breath, pulmonary edema
• Death from cardiorespiratory failure

It is detected in blood, urine, liver, kidneys, gastric contents, and lungs.

Methods: HPLC, mass spectrometry, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for protein identification.

Traces of the toxin can persist for up to 5 days after death.

Pathological signs include liver and kidney necrosis, gastrointestinal inflammation, and mucosal hemorrhages.

Store in a tightly sealed container, away from light, acids, and enzymes.
Shelf life: up to 5 years.
