Description

C21H22N2O2 is an alkaloid found in the seeds of the chilibuha plant (Strychnos nux-vomica).
It is a white, crystalline powder with a bitter taste and is odorless.
It was previously used medicinally in small doses as a tonic and respiratory stimulant, as well as in veterinary medicine and as a rat poison.
It is currently banned due to its extreme toxicity and the lack of a safe therapeutic range.

Strychnine is a powerful nerve poison.
It blocks the action of the neurotransmitter glycine in the spinal cord, causing uncontrolled excitation of motor neurons.
This results in convulsions, spasms of the respiratory muscles, and asphyxia.
Death occurs with full retention of consciousness.

Lethal dose:
Oral: 1-2 mg/kg body weight (approximately 20-30 mg for an adult).

For a child, 5-10 mg can be fatal.

Time to death:
First symptoms appear 10-30 minutes after ingestion.

Death occurs within 1-3 hours in severe poisoning due to asphyxia and cardiac arrest.
Consciousness is maintained until the last breath.

Signs of poisoning:
• Anxiety, convulsions, hypersensitivity to light and sound
• Severe spasms of the entire body, arching of the back (opisthotonos)
• Difficulty breathing, cyanosis of the face
• Spasm of the masticatory muscles, inability to open the mouth
• No loss of consciousness - the person is aware of what is happening
• Death from suffocation when breathing stops

It is detected in blood, urine, liver, gastric contents, and brain using HPLC, mass spectrometry, and chromatograph mass analysis.
It can be detected up to 2-3 weeks after death.
Characteristic postmortem signs include: convulsive posture, muscle fiber ruptures, and petechial hemorrhages.

Store in airtight dark glass containers, in a cool, dry place, protected from light, and under lock and key.
Shelf life: no more than 2 years.
