Description

Pb(C₂H₅)₄ is an organic lead compound, a clear oily liquid with a characteristic odor. It was used as an antiknock additive in gasoline (leaded gasoline). It is currently banned worldwide due to its extremely high toxicity and long-term effects on the nervous system. It was produced in large quantities until the 1980s.

Tetraethyl lead is a potent neurotoxin, easily absorbed through the skin and respiratory tract. Accumulation in the body leads to chronic lead poisoning (saturnism). It affects the central nervous system, liver, kidneys, and bone marrow. Even traces of the substance can be fatal with prolonged exposure.
It is especially dangerous in its vapor state.

Lethal dose:
Approximately 10 mg/kg orally or 0.1 ml/kg through skin contact.
As little as 0.5 ml can cause severe poisoning, and 1-2 ml can be fatal in an adult.

Signs of poisoning:
• Headache, insomnia, irritability
• Memory loss, confusion
• Tremors, convulsions, hallucinations
• Severe weakness, nausea, abdominal pain
• Respiratory and heart rhythm disturbances
• Coma, death from respiratory failure

It is determined by measuring the concentration of lead and its organic metabolites in the blood, brain, liver, kidneys, and bones.
Analysis methods: atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).

Store in a tightly closed container, away from heat and light.
Shelf life: up to 1 year.
