Description

C11H17N3O8 is an alkaloid neurotoxin found in the liver, skin, ovaries, and intestines of the poisonous pufferfish (Takifugu rubripes), pufferfish, and some species of octopus and mollusks.
In everyday life and cooking, it is known as “fugu fish poison.”
In medicine, it is being studied as a potential analgesic for chronic pain and as a sodium channel blocker in neurons.

One of the most potent natural neurotoxins.

Blocks voltage-gated sodium channels, leading to paralysis of the nervous and respiratory systems without impairing consciousness.

100 times more toxic than cyanide.

Does not destroy tissue structures and does not cause seizures.

Lethal dose:
About 1-2 mg for an adult.

Ingestion of 0.5 mg is fatal.

The toxin is not destroyed by heating and has no taste or odor.

Time of death:
First symptoms appear 10-30 minutes after ingestion.

Death can occur within 1-6 hours due to paralysis of the respiratory muscles and respiratory arrest.

Consciousness remains until the last moment.

Signs of poisoning:
• Numbness of the lips, tongue, and face, a crawling sensation
• Severe weakness, dizziness
• Impaired speech and coordination
• Progressive paralysis of the limbs and respiratory muscles
• Decreased blood pressure, bradycardia
• Complete paralysis of the body while remaining conscious
• Death by suffocation without pain or convulsions

It is found in blood, urine, liver, gastric contents, and food debris.
It is determined by HPLC, gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, and ELISA.
It persists in tissues for up to 5-7 days after death.
Characteristic: death with preserved consciousness, without convulsions or signs of asphyxia.

Store in a tightly sealed container, away from heat and light.
Avoid contact with skin, as the toxin is absorbed through mucous membranes.
Shelf life: up to 2 years.
