Thallium is one of the most toxic heavy metals.
It is rapidly absorbed through the skin, respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal tract.
It accumulates primarily in the kidneys, liver, brain, and hair follicles.
It affects the nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, heart, hair, and nails.
It is highly cumulative: even small doses can cause poisoning with repeated exposure.
Lethal dose:
2-5 mg/kg body weight (approximately 10-15 mg/kg for thallium compounds).
For an adult, the lethal dose is approximately 0.5-1.0 g of thallium or its salts.
Time of death:
Death occurs 5-10 days after ingestion due to multiple organ failure, cerebral edema, or cardiac arrest.
At lower doses - severe chronic poisoning with damage to the nervous system and hair loss after 2-3 weeks.
